A World of LearningField Experiences |
Learning doesn’t happen only in the classroom at Reid School. Frequent (at least two a month) field experiences provide hands-on learning in museums, historic homes and villages, Federal Reserve bank, diamond factory, businesses, transportation centers, architectural firms, an artist’s studio, symphonies, Native American Pow-Wow, and a mine, to just name a few. The use of field experiences and resource persons who come into the classroom to add “spice” to the lessons increase students’ interest and knowledge in the subject they are currently studying. The Preparatory Level students travel further afield. In 2009 after studying Far Eastern history they traveled to Japan, 2008 to London, 6 years to the Yucatan Peninsula, two summers throughout Europe, and several times they traveled to Washington D.C. (including 2010), and to Boston and New York. Lessons are prepared in advance for students and parents to study as they travel. Reid Ranch is also an outstanding place for students in the summer to study botany and ornithology and to attend classes in reading/English. Students, following class work, range over much of the Ranch’s 400 acres as they hike and study. Students are caught up in horseback riding, sports (frisbee golf, swimming, basketball, volleyball, soccer, miniature golf), crafts, and drama (fireside skits performed on a stage) culminating with cooking s’mores. An annual Reid Ranch Day is held for Reid School families.
